South African Ndebele culture art, with its geometric patterns and bright colours is the inspiration for this body of work. The collage consists of various small artworks, each 12” x 12” in size and individually priced. Each piece represents three different elements of an Ndebele home. Some of the pieces have thatched roofs, as well as doors and windows. Others represent only a wall and then some are small rondavels (thatched, round huts with mud walls).
About the artist’s work:
Always looking for interesting, novel ways to portray her environment, Rina uses a variety of media to create depth and texture in her work. Beads are traditional African decorative items and provide a smooth three-dimensional effect. Crochet work is another tradition, handed down from generation to generation and often evokes memories when touched and viewed. Simple, reflective, and highly evocative, especially for those who have lived or visited Africa.
About the Ndebele Tribes in South Africa:
The culture of the Ndebele people is unique. Historically, each family used a single rondavel for daily activities such as cooking and sleeping. Nowadays, the rondavel is used for traditional ceremonies and as families have grown, square houses have been built alongside for cooking and sleeping.
