A l'évidence, le peintre emploie la lumière extérieure pour mettre en scène l'activité de la jeune femme et accentuer la solitude de la protagoniste. Il s'agit d'un des premiers tableaux de la série des Window paintings", littéralement "Tableaux de fenêtre".
