Some information about this painting:
this painting represent one of the typical streets of a small city located in a region called Alentejo, in southern Portugal, named Beja. Situated on a hill with 277m of altitude, Beja this small city dominate a very vast surrounding plain. “The field thus arises as a natural border between urban life and rural life. Some proofs founded on a city street marks “the life of this village since its founding somewhere in the Iron Age.. Finding of greater importance, dispel all doubts about the pre-existence of a previous settlement to the Roman occupation; however, we still don’t know that people here would neither possess any information about the way they organized the pre-urban space. The ancient name of this town was PAX JULIA and the history tell us that it will have been founded by Julius Caesar or Augustus. It was the capital of “Pacensis conventus” and legally administered one of the regions that were the province of Lusitania. No doubt we are in the presence of an elementary city in the operation of large administrative machine that was the Roman regionalization”.
Like other places that I painted from Alentejo, Beja is a nice and small city (capital of Baixo Alentejo district), with very hot temperatures in the Summer and very cold in the Winter. Normally the houses are white with yellow-ocher, ultramarine or cobalt colors bars. The streets always are very clean. In the cities and villages of south of Portugal (specially in Alentejo) it’s common the women paint the facades of their houses, so everything is always very clean and full of light. Normally, all is white with red roofs, very clean, with many many flowers and very kind people. But we can find houses with a modern architecture too, however, even modern, it maintains some characteristics of the region's architecture.
