İlkel adıyla dağlama, antik çağlardan itibaren özellikle ahşap ve deri eşyaların bezeme işlemlerinde kullanılmıştır.
Bu sanatın, ilk defa Mezapotamya topraklarında, Selçuklu’larda görülmüştür. Büyük kale kapılarına iri başlı metal çivileri çakabilmek için Meşe ağaçlarına ateşle oyuklar açmışlar, çiviler çakmak ve bağlı oldukları klan/beyliklerin simge ve işaretlerini metal çubuklar kullanarak dağlama tekniği işlemişlerdir.
Teknik, Anadolu’da, bir süre sonra Selçuklu ve Osmanlı motiflerinin çeşitli han ve kervansarayların kapı, sundurma ve verandalarda süsleme ve motif olarak da kullanılmıştır.
Zaman içerisinde, resim sanatında da kullanılmaya başlanmasıyla birlikte; klasik siyah-beyaz resim tekniği tarzında, “sepya-beyaz” resim tekniği olarak gelişmiş ve güzel sanatlar alanında yerini almaya hazır, çağdaş bir resim tekniği haline gelmiştir.
Bugün yakma resim sanatında dünyanın önce gelen ilk birkaç ressamı arasında yer alan Murat Yılmaz’ı emsal sanatçılardan farklı kılan en önemli özellikleri; poster veya grafik çalışma izlenimi eren küçük ebatlı figüratif çalışmalardan ziyade, çok daha büyük ebatlarda zengin içerikli geniş plan çalışmalar yapması, ahşap tuval yüzeyinde herhangi bir çalışılmamış boş alan bırakmaksızın tüm yüzeyi bir yağlıboya tablo gibi bütünüyle değerlendirmesi ve ahşabın muhtelif tonlarda yakılması işlemini fiziken mümkün olabilecek en üst kalite düzeyinde uygulayarak karakalem resim tekniği kriterlerine uygun görsel sanat nitelikli çalışmalar yapmasıdır. Sanatçının çalışmaları bu nitelikleri itibariyle yakma resim sanatının dünya çapında en değerli ve benzersiz örneklerini oluşturmaktadır.
Ressamımız Yılmaz, ahşap yanığı renk tonları üzerine çeşitli boyalarla renklendirme yapılmasının, bu tekniğin özünü zedelediği ve orinalliğini bozduğu görüşüne sahip olduğundan, çalışmalarında herhangi bir çeşit boya kullanmamakta, çerçeve deseni de dahil olmak üzere, ahşap tuvaldeki renk tonlarının tümünü, tuval yüzeyini kızgın uçlu bir metal kalemle muhelif ısı derecelerinde yakarak elde etmektedir.
Sanatçının Brezilya’dan Japonya’ya kadar birçok ülkedeki koleksiyonlarda tabloları bulunmaktadır.

Murat Yılmaz was born in March 1957 in Diyarbakır.
Yılmaz, who was introduced to the burning painting technique while he was a student at Ergani Teachers School in Diyarbakır in the 1970s, graduated in 1974. In addition to his teaching duties, he improved himself in the field of pyrogravure and invented new techniques.
He is one of the first painters to apply the burning painting technique in painting with woodburned color tones in a way that presents aesthetic and artistic value.
Yılmaz moved to Istanbul in 1990 and continued his work there. In 2012, Yılmaz was subjected to a special exam opened by a committee consisting of instructors from the Painting, Sculpture and Ceramics departments of Marmara University and received 95 points from this exam; he has received the title of academic painter.
When he started teaching at the Kadıköy Public Education Center Evening Art School in 2013, Yılmaz wrote the wood burning technique as an educational module and thus contributed to the transfer of the technique to future generations.
Murat Yılmaz still continues to teach Wood Burning and Shaping at the Kadıköy Public Education Center Evening Art School, trains instructors who will pass on the technique and presents exhibitions of both his personal works and the works of his students every year within the school.
Today, Murat Yılmaz, who is among the first few painters in the world in the art of burning painting, has the most important features that differentiate him from his peer artists; Instead of small-sized figurative works that give the impression of posters or graphic works, he creates wide-plan works with rich content in much larger sizes, evaluates the entire surface as an oil painting without leaving any unworked empty space on the wooden canvas surface, and creates visual art works that comply with the charcoal drawing technique criteria by applying the process of burning the wood in various tones at the highest level of quality that is physically possible. The artist's works constitute the most valuable and unique examples of burning painting art in the world with these qualities.
