Benefits of Technology in Art - Examining Newer Perspectives

The evolution of art over the course of human history has been phenomenal and is driven by growth in technological expedients. The primitive paintings by cavemen to the most sophisticated art forms of present day creative brains have a common bridge, technology. With the experimentation of oil based pigments by Jan Van Eyck in 15th century, a new dimension of painting became apparent to the world. As 20th century was rolling in, photography was introduced which also transformed the way artists visualize their surroundings. The advancement of graphics arts is visible in the form of innovative screen printing which Andy Warhol has developed in recent times.

Technology is progressing at a rapid pace which is unparalleled in the annals of human history. The impact of technology is being experienced by artists too who now have access to wide array of cutting edge techniques and innovative media. The maturity and sophistication in technology are reflected by the work of artists who are harnessing the potential of technological interventions to take creativity to the next level. Interactive installation, conductive paint, and 3D printing are some examples of such artistic endeavors. The benefits of technology in arts would become visible from the ways artists have been leveraging new advancements to give better perspective to their creativity.

3D Printed Art

Additive manufacturing technology, known as 3D printing, was under intense development for many decades. As 21st century made its advent, 3D printing became available in the public domain. The potential of 3D printing art started getting touted by media. Professionals from science, healthcare and production sectors also realized the prospects of this technological art in making life easier for people.

3D print ready designs started getting incorporated in art forms and designing pursuits from 2005 on a high note. Since then it has pervaded various forms of art increasingly. By leveraging this technique, artists are capable of creating intricately detailed exquisite models which can be manipulated at infinite levels. The 3D printed forms can serve as independent art pieces or can be scaled into full blown-up pieces.

Individual artists as well as reputed companies are using 3D printing for executing an array of activities. The technology is utilized in optimum manner by artists on their own or through support of reputed 3d companies.

Interactive Art

From 1950 onwards, installation and interactive art forms have been gaining traction. However, phenomenal developments in digital technologies in recent times have empowered artists in creating engaging experiences through which audiences can be involved in interaction with art forms at multiple levels.

Rafael Lozano Hemmer had heralded the digital installation art along with others. In 2005, he had unveiled the ‘Subtitled Public’ in which a darkened room was fitted with infrared surveillance cameras. Visitors’ movement is tracked by the cameras. Single verb projection is done on the torso of each visitor. This allows the camera to follow the visitor all along the room. As soon as a visitor would touch other, the exchange of verbs takes place. This allows engagement of the visitors with each other and also the artwork displayed.

Online Art

The dropping prices of data has made internet pervade various strata of society. People are consuming visually information online like never before. Consequently, artists too are focusing on this media and publishing art pieces which can be viewed over internet only. The established conventions of artistic form are getting challenged online. This is because the sites on which new art is published or sold can be accessed by everyone.

During the 1990s, the use of internet for selling and publishing art was triggered with the net. Art movement. The constraints posed by traditional market of art have been surmounted by online art.

Augmented Reality

With the use of augmented reality technology users can get the interactive experience through addition of information layers supplemented by computer imagery graphics. Through Augmented Reality, a unique blend of the physical world inhabited by us and the digital world where we prefer to spend significant amount of time is accomplished.

The various facets of the mural assume 3D form in Augmented Reality. The 3D appearance is not static and keeps shifting as well as changing based on the position of the viewer. Artists who had to earlier expressed their creativity through isolated conditions can take advantage of dimensions of augmented reality. Huge amount of technical skills and infrastructural support is no longer required. Viewers can be taken on the journey of time exploration by artists for explaining what lies behind the apparent in their art forms. The art can be enhanced with illustrations.

Many renowned companies are offering artists a platform to explore their potential with the help of cost competitive augmented reality services. Viewers can also interact with the showpieces exhibited in galleries, museums and other art centers with the help of this innovative art medium.

Virtual Reality

The limits of contemporary art are being expanded progressively by artists who are delving deeper into virtual reality. The multi-sensory headsets lie at the core of Virtual Reality and take the viewers to a newer environment which is completely simulated. In this new environment, reality is presented in a virtual version allowing viewers to look, hear and interact with various elements. One can disappear into a newer dimension which is not as mundane as the physical plane of existence.

Virtual reality services are changing the way art forms were developed. The skills required for creation and production of art are also changing. There is no prospect of virtual reality destroying the traditional forms of visual art. It is actually serving to obscure the boundaries that separate real and virtual art forms. Artists can express their creative energies through newer avenues.

The future of technology in Art

Technology is making rapid strides. It may appear difficult to keep pace with the same. Artists may see this as a challenge. But this is not the case. One just needs to remain abreast of the technological interventions and contemporary changes that are making ripples. Coding is a pre-requisite which when learnt can give access to latest dimensions of art oriented technology. Although it may appear cost intensive initially but in the long run, only artistic instincts would be strengthened.

The capabilities of artists in creating cutting-edge art forms which are in sync with the latest technological developments are being sufficiently reinforced by newer advancements. The trend would continue to gain traction in the future also. The favorable impacts of digital age on the artistic evolution are being gradually realized by artists and leading CAD design services providers.
