Kathy Lumsden’s love of art began as a child. She loved to draw, and did so throughout her childhood. The desire to learn to paint was stimulated by a friend from high school who took art lessons. Ms. Lumsden was mesmerized by the beautiful oil paintings created by her friend, and the desire to learn to paint lingered in the back of her mind for many years.
Ms. Lumsden graduated from nursing school in 1984 and has worked as a nurse since then. During these years, she also found the time to raise a family. In 2004, she finally got around to pursuing her dream of painting in oil. A self-taught artist, Ms. Lumsden gained much of her knowledge from books and from videos by Helen Van Wyk, Robert Warren, Alexi Antonov and Mark Carder. She has been influenced by Old Masters such as John William Waterhouse and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Still life paintings constitute the majority of Ms. Lumsden’s work. She enjoys a variety of subjects and this is evident in her paintings.
Ms. Lumsden finds that painting is a wonderful, creative outlet and a stress reliever after working a hectic 12 hour shift as an RN in the intensive care unit at Brookwood Medical Center. In addition to painting and working in the ICU, Ms. Lumsden owns Lumsden Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC. Her paintings grace the walls of homes in the Birmingham and Mobile areas. She is a member of the Birmingham Art Association and her work has been exhibited in the BAA Member’s Shows. Ms. Lumsden receives great joy in watching the faces and hearing the remarks from people who see her paintings for the first time.
