Back in the early '70s, I was creating art pieces on raw canvas framed only with a redwood bender board at the top. I would sew in weights at the base of the canvas so the canvas would drape nicely.
I created these 10' canvases on the floor of my studio using anchored strings for circles starting with graphite, pastels & Conte' crayons & using straight edges for other geographic shapes. For other curved shapes, I would create the initial outlines, i.e., "under-sketch" using bender board & tape.
Following the completion of the "under-sketch" artwork, I would collect newspapers & magazines & tear them into piles of color & black & white pieces.
I used solvents to transfer the inks to the canvas rubbing them with a spoon.
During this period I was exploring balancing geometry & primary colors while continuing my overall math based signature based upon 3 & its derivatives.
