SOUTHERN SPIRIT.

A collection inspired by aboriginal culture

It was in 1999 that the artist JOYCE made her first trip to southern land. First to New Zealand where it was in the Auckland museum she had her introduction to the Maori works which were to fascinate her. Upon her return to southern climes, she went to Australia and came to appreciate more fully the ancestral techniques, the search for the pigments which were the hidden gifts of nature.

It took her 8 years of maturation before she dared attempt a western interpretation of the work which she presents today.

THE EARTH: ever present fundamental colours of brown sometimes fringed with ochre, crimson is Omni present, both in the background of the canvases as well as in the drawings of the shapes. It is most assuredly present in its symbolism of mother earth.

THE SKY: expressed through the hard luminous blue of cobalt, brings the spirituality, the fervour, the communication with the beyond.

MAN: is depicted in the feeling throughout the expression in each picture. The composition of each canvas is structured around the support of the dotted white lines, around which harmonize and play the colours which unite man to nature and heaven.

The paint is applied to the canvas not with western painting tools but with the use of a wooden stick so as to remain close to the primitive spirit of those who reverse their gods through the use of what nature has provided either sticks or straw.
