Jean-Jacques Massou was born on July 3, 1957 in Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) and grew up in the Hautes-Pyrénées, where he completed all his schooling. It was only during his university studies in English in the early 1980s that he gradually discovered his passion for images and their construction. At the age of 28, after acquiring his first film SLR camera, a PENTAX ME SUPER with two PENTAX lenses, he seriously immersed himself in photography. The significantly higher quality of the images compared to his old “instamatic” camera pushed him to perfect his technique.
Since 1985, Jean-Jacques has used several reflex cameras, including the NIKON F3, the NIKON F90, the CANON FTQL from the 60s, the CANON EOS 10, the CANON POWERSHOT G5, the NIKON D70, the Nikon D90, and currently he works with a NIKON F100 and a NIKON D7000. Passionate about film photography, he also started a camera collection including models such as the Nikon EM, Nikon FE, Nikon F801s and Nikon F5.
His self-taught career led him to explore the black and white laboratory for around 15 years, before moving towards digital in recent years while continuing to practice film. For him, the magic of the laboratory lies in the total control of the creation of the photo, with the exception of the film. Although he was initially reluctant to move to digital, he was ultimately convinced by its practicality and economy, even though the quality of film remains, he says, unrivaled.
Jean-Jacques Massou views photography as a means of capturing the ephemeral and revealing beauty and harmony in the world around us, even in moments when they seem gone.
