A l'époque de l'Empire Ottoman toutes les communautés religieuses juives, chrétiennes, musulmanes cohabitaient en parfaite intelligence, échanges, polyglottes, et y ont laissé leurs splendides traces : églises, synagogues, mosquées...
Ici la mosquée Mecidiye, construite en style néobaroque, en 1855, par les architectes arméniens Balyan, père et fils, à la demande du Sultan Abdülmecid 1er, sur les plans de l'Opéra Garnier de Paris...
