SANTO DOMINGO DE GUZMÁN CHURCH AND ROSARIO CHAPEL
The Dominicans arrived in Oaxaca in 1528. Simultaneously the indigenous town of Huaxyacac was erected in Villa de Antequera. In 1551, the City Council granted the Dominicans some land located in the vicinity of the Cerro del Fortín with the purpose of building a convent. The final works of the temple were completed in 1666. The last modification to the building occurred in 1724, with the construction of the Chapel of the Rosary. Starting in 1812, the Temple of Santo Domingo was occupied by the different armies that disputed control of the country. In 1859, with the application of the Iglesias Law, it was destined for the use of the Mexican Army. With the return of the Dominicans to Oaxaca in 1938, the restoration began. Fray Esteban Arroyo inaugurated the current main altarpiece in 1959, and in 1976 the restoration continued. The annexed convent is the headquarters of the Regional Museum of Oaxaca. It houses the artistic objects discovered by Alfonso Caso in Tomb 7 of Monte Albán, from the Mixtec culture. And the Botanical Garden of Oaxaca.
