La permanencia del culto a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre en las comunidades cubanas de la diáspora es un reflejo de afirmación en la identidad nacional que trasciende el hecho meramente religioso e implica un autorreconocimiento de las raíces y la conciencia de nación por encima de cualquier consideración de otra índole.
Ya en el plano individual, muchos de los cubanos que salen de la isla, de forma temporal o definitiva, llevan consigo una imagen de la Virgen a manera de protección o de identificación con una realidad que sienten íntimamente ligada a la historia personal.
Por otra parte, la Virgen es y continuará siendo un símbolo de la identidad cubana, ya no en su carácter religioso, sino secular, por eso la propuesta parte de un pasaporte ordinario en el cuál los datos personales han sido sustituidos por datos históricos relacionados con el hallazgo y la declaración de la imagen como patrona de Cuba, así como un permiso de salida múltiple que aluda a la extensión y fuerza de su culto más allá de nuestras fronteras.
