Three layers of plaster bandages over a mesh on top of a stretcher frame.
„ThreeViews“ technique.

This plaster-relief artwork reminds me of a karstic landscape with red elements.

This object was at first painted completely white and then with black from the left hand side and red from the right hand side using resin sprays.
So the white can only be seen from the front, predominatly in the valleys of the second layer and the object looks red from the right and black from the left hand side („ThreeViews“-technique). It is your position in front of the object that defines you personal colour experience.

Dieter List is a contemporary German sculptor. He works with plaster bandages, with two different techniques. First one is the "ThreeViews" technique, where the plaster bandages are processed wet and hardened on drying, so they become very firm. After that he gives them strong contours and attaches them to stretcher bars. The result is expressive relief, and the viewer, depending on the location and depending on the lighting, receives different color experiences.

Second one is the  "Pure" technique, where the plaster is smoothed so that it gets a leveled surface. The created bodies are more reminiscent of spaces, of architecture, and are clearer and stricter in their effect than the "ThreeViews" objects.

Dieter List was born in 1959, in Hamburg, Germany.
