Daniel Roblin, artist photographer, is driven by a passion for portraiture. He likes to meet there and seek the essence of the human being, which sometimes emerges in a brilliant way or sometimes remains concealed. He also explores portraits with darker connotations, such as those of Cambodians or Rwandans. What he is perhaps looking for is the small detail that, in the midst of chaos, brings us closer to a moment of peace, to an encounter with oneself and above all with others.
If Daniel Roblin had to express his idea of work through an expression, he would probably choose this one: "Only the moment is truth", taken from the writings of Geneviève Brisac.
He strives to transcend "the moment", to explore the limits of the perceptible and the possibilities of understanding, embracing the complexity of the present. The moment of life is revealed in the gaze of a child smiling or expressing incredible distress, in the light that reveals nature from a new angle, from another possibility. The philosopher André Lalande defines the moment as "a very short duration that consciousness grasps as a whole".
Daniel Roblin's quest is to "seize the moment of abandonment and sharing oneself with the other". There is no attempt to erase the past, because the present cannot exist without it. Nor does it flee from the future, because in its ephemeral aspect, the present is already the future. It is this junction that he explores in photography, but also in other practices such as Qi Gong or Tai Chi, which enrich his artistic approach.
This quest leads him down paths whose deep meaning still eludes him, but the words of Marcel Proust invite him to dig this furrow: "The real journey of discovery does not consist in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes ."
At the heart of his work as a photographer, Daniel Roblin considers that the human being is the most important part. He observes the other with modesty, respect and depth, in his identity, cultural and economic differences.
Daniel Roblin lives and works in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France. He was born in 1953.
