My neighbour and good friend when I lived in Holland. In 2003 he phoned me, since I moved to France, he wanted to see me for a special reason. When we met in France, he told me he had cancer and is was terminal. That was very bad news. He stayed a couple of days because he wanted me to paint his portrait for when he would die, for his wife. She knew nothing about it, his daughter did. So, I made a series of photographs and some rough sketches, because he didn't want me to start painting right away.
He died, far too young in 2004. So, it was time to start painting his portrait as it is now. It's him alright and his wife was delighted. And I was happy I could do it for him and his wife.

Cornelus was born in January 31, 1940, in Velsen, The Netherlands.
In 1958, after secondary education, he started as a lay-out man with publishers “De Spaarnestad”, Haarlem.
During that period he followed evening courses for illustration at the “Kunstnijverheidschool”, Amsterdam (the present Rietveld
Academie). One of his teachers there was Piet Klaasse.
Cornelus evolved as an illustrator, designer and art director at several big advertising agencies. He worked in advertising for about fourty years of which some thirty years as a free-lance.
Starting in 1960, for several years, he followed life drawing lessons, given by Cor Dik, at the “Normaalschool”, Amsterdam. Cor Dik, who was his mentor for a long time, urged him to paint. From that period date some self portraits and portraits of his wife. Cornelus is predominantly autodidact.
