Chrislen
Chrislen is a contemporary French artist whose artistic journey commenced in 1988 when she entered the Saint-Charles Faculty of Plastic Arts in Paris. For Chrislen, her artistic path is a continuous exploration between materials, colors, and emotions. She revels in playing with diverse media and exploring various subjects, with a fundamental attraction to the portrayal of living things. Her artistic expression often takes the form of evocative depictions of suspended moments—intimate instances that are personal or shared.
Drawing inspiration from the myriad expressions that define human existence, Chrislen captures the essence of beings endowed with thoughts, humanity, and emotions. In her evolving artistic practice, she increasingly embraces symbolism and dreaminess as dominant themes.
Employing mixed techniques, Chrislen enjoys the amalgamation of different mediums such as acrylic, ink, pastels, pigments, pencil, scraping, and collage. Her approach to the canvas involves exploring contrasts between pictorial models, flat areas, and collages for texture, while maintaining a significant emphasis on drawing. Detailed elements contribute to the creation of a certain intimacy, and strokes of black stone, combined with liquid glazes, offer a play between transparency and lightness, existence and erasure.
Chrislen finds freedom in the combination of these diverse techniques, utilizing them as tools for her artistic expression. While not explicitly aligning with any particular pictorial movement, she acknowledges an affinity for expressionism. For her, expressionism is significant because it is "above all the art of emotion, striving to describe the external world in a language that is more emotional than plastic."
For Chrislen, painting is a dynamic process, a continuous research journey, navigating through materials, colors, and emotions. Her artistic endeavors encapsulate a quest for the profound connections that exist between the tangible and the emotional, creating a rich tapestry of visual narratives that invite viewers to share in the beauty of suspended moments.
