Acrylic

Paint using traditional pigments mixed with synthetic resins.

Painting Pastel

Pastel is an instrument widely used in plastic arts. Taking the form of a colored plastic stick, it is composed of pigments, a filler (chalk or plaster) and a binder (gum arabic, oil, wax). We mainly distinguish fatty pastels (oil or wax), dry pastels, whether soft or hard. Invented in Europe at the end of the 15th century, this tool was very quickly used by great portrait painters of French royalty, such as Charles Le Brun, Rosalba Carriera, Jean Siméon Chardin or Maurice Quentin de La Tour, who will be considered the "Prince of pastellists", thanks to a method of fixation of which only he knew the secret.

Pastel

Drawing made with a colored stick. It consists of pigments, a charge and a binder. A distinction is made between dry pastels (soft or hard) and fatty pastels (oil or wax).

Pigments

Paint made with colored powder suspended in a liquid binder to obtain some paint or ink.

Enamel

Paint made with molten glass powder and oxide. The enamels are then applied by mixing them with distilled water. There is a form of vitrifiable enamel which consist of mixing the oxides with very little glass and oil until a paste is obtained. They are then applied as a painting.

Mosaic

Sculpture technique using fragments of stone, colored stones, enamel, glass, or even ceramic, assembled with putty or plaster, to form patterns or figures.

Plastic

Sculpture technique using plastic, a petroleum product that can be molded or modelled.

Collages

Collage is an artistic creation technique that consists of making a plastic creation by combining elements of various kinds: more or less flat materials, such as printed oilcloth, painting or drawing, newspaper extracts with text and photos, paper paintings, documents, various objects of low relief, etc. When the creation incorporates elements in relief, one can also speak of assemblage. This also includes glued papers, which employ a variety of papers, including newspaper, and drawing techniques.

Conté

Colored drawing made with colored pencil, an instrument made of a small wooden stick used as a sheath for a colored mine of the same length.

Marker

Drawing made using a large felt with its own ink source. The ink may or may not be indelible.

Cement

Sculpture technique using an artificial material obtained by grinding and baking a mixture of limestone and clay.

Plaster

Sculpture technique using a white powder obtained by cooking and grinding gypsum and which, when mixed in water, hardening provides a solid material.

Resin

Sculpture technique using a polymer product (natural, artificial or synthetic) to make a sculpture.

Technic Painting

Painting is an art form of painting on a surface by aesthetically applying colored fluids. Painters represent a very personal expression on supports such as paper, rock, canvas, wood, bark, glass, concrete and many other substrates. Work of representation or invention, painting can be naturalistic and figurative, or abstract. It can have narrative, descriptive, symbolic, spiritual, or philosophical content.

Mixed technique blending research, culture, painting and a modern type of mosaic. Carla Bertoli converts the usage of recycable materials into an artistic form, uses recycled elements with the mosaic technique and transforms them into pictorial and volumetric pieces that compose the parts of the support in 3D.

Carla Bertoli was born in August 1963 in Milan, where she still lives and works. During her childhood she gets in touch with artisanal ability through her grandfather, a skilled wood carver, and her father, a goldsmith and artist who exhibited his creations for the Milan company Cusi at the New York Moma in the years 1950 to 55.
This closeness to artistic techniques alongside the interest in arts as a privileged channel of expression leads her to study the ancient technique of mosaic: 1994 through 2000 she attends several courses in mosaics. In 2002 she attends the studio of Paolo Maimonte, teacher at the Milan Castello Sforzesco School of Applied Arts, where she expands the historic knowledge of the technique from the Byzantine age to today, the study of chromatic relations and of materials.
A different interest, connected to the vibration properties of crystals and the chromatic properties of semiprecious stones, imprints her first creations.

The educational path of the artist feeds on rich encounters: she attends the cultural gatherings of Maria Teresa Isenburg, aka Maté, who introduces her to the use of materials taken from everyday life that, fragmented, assume an artistic function; in parallel, she strengthens her interest in pictorial expression by attending the Free Academy of Painting led by Vittorio Viviani in 2008/2009.

These are the years when Carla Bertoli identifies the reference of her artistic research: portraying famous people and clients, recalling chromatic contrasts typical of Pop Art, enhanced with refined framing angles.
Starting 2007, the quest widens: the pictorial language bonds with the mosaic technique that, beyond an even more skilled execution, becomes a terrain for experimentation. Carla transforms recycled elements into mosaic material, into pictorial and volumetric pieces composing parts of the support.

In 2012 she achieves the Certificate of Completion of the Abramovich Method.
In 2013 she starts a parallel path, evolving her artistic capacities, immersing in abstract art. This allows her to try new painting techniques and new chromatic effects, pushing beyond the boundaries imposed by shapes.
