Еще до получения диплома о профессиональном образовании, этюды Богатова обращали на себя внимание тщательностью живописной отделки, мастерством, непритязательностью мотива, свежестью видения и живостью, присущей русскому пейзажу настроения. Гармоничность природы и человека, мотивы тишины и покоя, "стихшего ветра" читаются в программных вещах и этюдах в пейзаже, портрете, историческом жанре.
Детство Ильи Богатова пришлось на поздний советский период.С родителями он объехал тогда большую страну и получил яркие, бесценные, разнообразные впечатления. В юности в перестроечное время, обогащая жизненный опыт, перепробовал множество профессий разных квалификаций. В зрелые годы осознанно и ответственно выбрал профессию художника и место жительства -посёлок Лежнево. Последние два обстоятельства: профессиональная ответственность и жизнь в старинном торгово-промысловом селе в центре россии-сформировали ощущение времени и пространства, идеологию и стиль художника.
Как для многих творческих людей российская глубинка стала для него местом постижения нравственные сути народной жизни и источником вдохновения. Лежнево, возникшее в незапамятные времена на бойком перекрестке торговых путей, впервые упоминается в письменных источниках XVI века как богатое государево село. Сохранившееся культовые, промышленные и жилые постройки в стиле провинциального классицизма, органично вписанные в естественную природную среду, делают Лежнево одним из интереснейших мест Ивановской области.
В жанре пейзажа в поле зрения художника попадают не только природные виды и архитектурные сооружения, но и редкие для горожан анималистические объекты. Мокрая ранняя весна, набрякшее дождями небо осени, рассеянный свет летнего вечера, каменные и деревянные дома, мостики, лошадки, коровы, куры увлекают зрителя не внешними эффектами, а возможностью глубинного искреннего сопереживания. Мудрость старости, достоинства середины жизни, просветление православной верой, непосредственность детства, самоуглубленность отрочества-темы Богатова-портретиста. Неслучайно обращение живописца к историческому жанру, обусловлены на первый взгляд не столько интересом к динамике исторических событий, сколько этнографии, быту XIII и последующих веков.Часто моделью художника не только в портретах, а и в исторических картинах становится жена Ольга, в мужских персонажах проглядывают автопортретные черты: прошедшее время завязывается в тугой узел с современностью.
Достигнув свободы в ремесле, совершенствуя реалистическую манеру, находя собственные темы в разных жанрах, Илья Богатов, избегая сиюминутности бросских и поверхностных приемов, продолжает развиваться в традиционном для русского искусства гуманистическом направлении.Чем и привлекателен.
