Dan Culcer, born June 15, 1941 in Sulina, Romania, is a digital artist and photographer whose unique career combines graphic arts, literary criticism and a rich life experience marked by exile. Son of a doctor and a teacher from Transylvania, Dan Culcer studied Romanian Literature in Cluj before beginning an academic career in Romania.

His passion for literature and journalism led him to co-found the cultural monthly Vatra in Târgu Mureș in 1971, alongside Romulus Guga, Mihai Sin and Gavril Sedran. As deputy editor-in-chief and literary critic, he distinguished himself by his commitment to the cultural world. However, his writings on exile literature and his contacts with the Romanian diaspora attracted the attention of the political police, the Securitate, leading to constant surveillance.

Under political pressure, Dan Culcer decided to leave Romania in 1987 to settle in France. This decision marked a turning point in his career. In France, he pursued post-graduate studies in journalism and communication, specializing in editorial secretarial work, book and magazine layout, and poster design. He trained at the Centre de Formation et Perfectionnement des Journalistes in Paris and at the Institut Français de Presse, becoming an experienced user of Quark XPress software and the Adobe suite on Apple Macintosh workstations.

Since his arrival in France, Dan Culcer has devoted himself to graphic arts while continuing to write literary criticism. His artistic activity focuses on the creation of digital images and photographs, exploiting digital tools to explore new forms of visual expression.

Today, Dan Culcer is recognized for his ability to fuse modern graphic techniques with a rich critical and cultural tradition. His digital and photographic works bear witness to a journey marked by exile, resilience, and an unwavering passion for art and literature.
