Catherine serait née vers 290 dans une famille noble d'Alexandrie, en Égypte. Dotée d'une grande intelligence, elle fut placée au niveau des plus grands poètes et philosophes du moment. Une nuit, elle vit en songe le Christ et décida de lui consacrer sa vie.
L'empereur de Rome, Maximien, venu à Alexandrie, y présidait une grande fête païenne. La jeune fille saisit cette occasion pour tenter de l'amener à se convertir au christianisme, mais cela ne fit que soulever sa colère. Pour la mettre à l'épreuve, il lui impose un débat philosophique avec cinquante savants, mais au grand dépit de l'empereur, elle réussit à les convertir. Maximien les fait exécuter et propose le mariage à Catherine qui refuse avec mépris. L'empereur ordonne alors de la faire torturer en usant d'une machine constituée de roues garnies de pointes. Par un miracle divin, les roues se brisent sur son corps, et les pointes aveuglent les bourreaux. Obstiné, Maximien ordonne alors qu'elle soit décapitée. La légende raconte que de son cou a jailli du lait.
