There is a vast variety of styles, of the figures and sculptures found in Africa, which is a testament to the diversity and complexity of the various ethnic groups that share the continent. Often varying within the same context of origin depending on the use of the object, but wide regional trends are apparent; sculpture is most common among “groups of settled cultivators in the areas drained by the Niger and Congo rivers” in West Africa. Many West African figures were used in religious rituals and often coated with materials placed on them for ceremonial offerings.
We invite you to surf through our collection of wooden sculptures and bronze. Most African sculptures were historically made of wood, the natural material for carving, and other organic materials that have not survived from earlier than at most a few centuries ago; older pottery figures are found from a number of areas.
