About this represetation: The Algarve’s traditional architecture has a strong Arab influence, dominated by houses painted in white color (in old days it was whitewashed - which is still done in the Alentejo, also in south of Portugal), the roofs made with Moorish tiles, terraces, “platibandas” (walls to hide the roofs) decorated with attractive colors and, of course, the famous chimneys. It are undoubtedly the chimneys that are the “ex libris” of the Algarve. Simultaneously useful and decorative, more or less elaborated, square or rectangular, cylindrical or prismatic, the Algarvian chimneys are an unmistakable symbol of the Moorish occupation over five centuries. Many of them even resemble small towers or Arabian minarets. The elders say that once there were not two equal chimneys because the decoration of each of them could depend not only of the days when they were built, but also on the financial possibilities of their owners. And even became an element of despique: who had more money always made a chimney more elaborate than the neighbor. Today may not be so elaborate and there are many equals, but the truth is that they continue to be the “ex libris” of the Algarve. . Sometimes, above one roof you can see four, five, six, ten chimneys or more chimneys! So, in this watercolor, and registrating one of several models of this Algarve’s symbols, I represent more one of several chimneys of the beautiful algarvian village of Ferragudo
