Biarritz is a city in southwestern France. It's known for its beaches, surfing, and art scene.
Biarritz is a coastal city in southwestern France, on the Bay of Biscay. It has been a popular tourist destination since the 19th century and its reputation as an "artistic" or "bohemian" resort town continues to this day. The city's name derives from that of the Basque word for “the mouth (or estuary) of rivers”. In 1524 Spanish sailors landed near what they called Río de la Posesión, which was later corrupted to Río de la Pósa; then by folk etymology became Rio Bravo del Norte (“Northern River”).
The South West region of France is home to many heart-stopping attractions, including famous beaches that attract surfers from around the world and picturesque mountain villages. It's a subtle blend of modern style and Basque tradition that promises an unforgettable experience. Welcome to the Basque Country. Biarritz has a positive atmosphere. It consists mainly of large houses that serve as summer retreats. The town is elegant, but well balanced by a relaxed surf culture with a long history. Biarritz's unique identity is shaped by this interesting contrast. The surf scene in Biarritz was founded by wealthy beachgoers. The mid-19th century saw the emergence of surfing. Empress Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III, discovered Biarritz. She fell in love with the 6 km of sandy beaches, the cliffs, and the healing seawater. Empress Eugenie had a summer residence built near the ocean, the "Palais Eugenie". The Hotel du Palais Biarritz has converted shortly afterwards. It was once the center of a whaling community. Port Vieux was to become a fashionable spa and holiday destination, and eventually a surfing Mecca. Discover on Artmajeur many of the works that the region has inspired artists to create!
