Do you love art?

Vietnamese art has a long and rich history. It has a wide range of styles, techniques and themes, ranging from dramatic landscapes, mesmerizing abstracts and exquisite figuratives to edgy contemporary creations.

A unique blend of eastern and western elements is a trademark of the country's art. French artistic influences were largely absorbed by Vietnam at the beginning of the 19th century, and many institutions such as the Fine Arts College of Indochina and other French schools were established.

Early painters trained at the Ecole Superieure des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, such as To Ngoc Van and Nguyen Sang exhibited their works in international fairs and exhibitions, including Rome (1932), Milan (1934), Brussels (1935) and San Francisco (1937). Today, the French influence is still apparent in many aspects of Vietnamese art.

The Revolution War fostered a patriotic zeal among artists in Vietnam and paved the way for a new wave of creativity between 1960s and 1970s. Artists like Nguyen Trung, Lam Triet, Ho Hun Thu, Nghi Cao Uyen and others helped break through the stale atmosphere of traditional Vietnamese art and gain a reputation for their talents.

Silk painting is also a tradition that began in Vietnam. The silk industry is a major contributor to the economy of this country. Villagers grow mulberry trees and feed them special worms that produce the silk.

Performance art has been a significant part of Vietnamese culture. The first pioneers of the genre, such as Tran Luong, explored politics, history and personal and collective memory through their performances. Several other prominent artists of the 1990s, such as Hong Viet Dung, Ha Tri Hieu, Dang Xuan Hoa and Pham Quang Vinh, ushered in international recognition for Vietnamese art.
