Do you love Route 66?
The road that was once known as Route 66 spanned the United States. By the mid-1930s, Route 66 had already been referred to as the "Main Street of America" by promoters such as John Woodruff of Springfield, Missouri, and Cyrus Avery of Tulsa, Oklahoma. These early promoters were so excited about the long-distance traffic that they established multistate chambers of commerce to support business along the road. The increased long-distance traffic transformed the economies of cities along Route 66.
When should you travel along Route 66? When is the best time of year to visit the iconic route? Most people drive the historic highway between early May and late September, when temperatures are mildest. However, the weather varies considerably, and some areas are less desirable than others. If you are traveling with kids, it is recommended that you visit during the summer months, when the temperatures are pleasantly warm. Since Route 66 crosses six climate zones, you must also account for the possibility of detours and other delays.
The music and lyrics of Route 66 are a testament to the road's history. The song "Route 66" was first recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946 and has been covered by countless artists since then. The music on the road is equally legendary and inspired musicians, filmmakers, writers, and even video games. Nat King Cole and Bobby Troup wrote the song "Redneck" in 1946 and recorded it in the same year, but the movie version, starring Nat King Cole and other artists, is more optimistic and less controversial than the book.
