Did He Manage To Find This Country?
Scrutinising the pictures of Ashot Kirakossian, the first thing that comes to mind is an artist meditating in an aerial environment. His landscapes seem to be unfinished, with the objects and characters left unsaid and the rhythmic basis founded on variations of a poetic state so closed and refined that it is difficult, at first, to define his painterly talent.
Ashot Kirakossian (born 1960) grew up far from the two main centres of his oeuvre -- Moscow and Yerevan. He was raised in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia and home to many generations of outstanding Armenian artists. What are the two most important things for any artist in Tbilisi? The answer is the home -- “every morning, the courtyard of our house was wreathed in mist; only your feet were visible; the mist then slowly lifted, revealing the earth, the trees and the world” -- and the family. Ashot’s father was a jeweller, who created his own ornamental scripts on artistic decorations. He supported his son in his dreams of becoming a free artist and his desire to find himself in a world of eternal transformations.
At the age of sixteen, Ashot Kirakossian went to Moscow to study at the Surikov Institute of Art. Passing the entrance examinations at the fourth attempt, he graduated six years later. The artist’s persistence, selectiveness, keen perception of reality and analytical approach have led him to his current form of metaphysical painting. Kirakossian minimalist representationalism makes him not so much imperceptible and modest as almost hidden in his figurative painting. Although his inner ambitions are important, they are less evident. The stillness in his works is more reflective of the birth of a sound or a melody than a conscious silence as, for example, in the art of Chibukhchian. The depicted objects are mostly trees -- sometimes without crowns, sometimes with their branches in melodic movement -- hills in variations of waves, like an endless panoramic image, or purposeful combinations of the ends of platans and leafless trees. The list could go and on.
The enigma of such combinations lies in the artist’s own personal disposition. His professional stance is reflected in his personal biography. When in Moscow, he encountered the love of his life, both in the form of a concrete person (a Korean girl called Mira) and the art of her country. The art of distant Korea refreshed Ashot’s own oeuvre, becoming an important component in his creative synthesis.
Other important influences were the refined, erotic Art Nouveau of the turn of the century, the Neo-Primitivism of Tivadar Csontvary Kosztka, the metaphysical paintings of Giorgio Morandi, the Surrealism of Luis Buñuel, the pulsating canvases of Vincent van Gogh and the works of Martin Petrosian, variating in a yellow register of ochre. Ashot Kirakossian slots the cultural dispositions of Korea, China and Japan naturally into the stylistics of his own painting. He is not the only one to do so. In 1918, the great Armenian poet Yeghishe Charents travelled through India, China and Japan. Where Charents was interrupted by the First World War and the post-war chaos, I believe that Kirakossian will succeed. He will be helped by the reality of his own life and the current situation in world culture, which seeks unexpected approaches, angles and cross-sections in a modern synthesis of cultures, religions and philosophies. This will both contribute to Ashot’s painting and help to verify the situation regarding the artistic imagination in the middle generation of Armenian artists as a whole in the national culture, the aspirations of which are partially ambitions and partially justified.
Ahead lies an enormous front of creative quests. Ashot’s set of methods and artistic quests are exceedingly diverse, suggesting that he will succeed in setting and resolving a series of important questions. The paradox of his creative experience lies in the constantly variating space in which the mountains, trees, water and, more rarely, man (often faceless, yet painfully and familiarly unfamiliar) interact, forming a single landscape of reflections. This landscape is full of trembling notes and sharp glances. Pulsating, it leads its own separate life -- outside the artist’s own fate and outside his pictures.
Does this imply, then, that each work is merely a page or a detail in the general picture of Kirakossian’s oeuvre? I do not think so. Every picture is the bearer of a “code” which, like an emblematic series, is part of the range of the emotional incandescence of his feelings (a relatively narrow range, in an intimate register).
These feelings are tinged with sorrow and melancholy, quiet and lucid languor, or sensual and penetrating purification. Although the subject of the picture seems simple and completely clear, it is, at the same time, the start of a parable or a philosophical-poetic disposition. Herein lies the secret of Ashot’s biunity of cultures and artistic nature, perceptible and open to the new horizons of synthesis. This is, perhaps, his creed. The world culture is part of his reflections, like the quest for his own persona, in the misty dreams of our days. The result is the appearance of mature convictions and the power of sensual revelations, without which there is no reality and no art.

"All of the trees of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today"
"All of the trees of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today"
I like to paint trees very much. They are noble, refined, generous… They influence magically. Their shapes, silhouettes, colors, age and diversity create inimitable sensation. They carry huge information within themselves. And they emit enormous store of positive energy.
During the last 20 years my Art Concept was not changed very much! I am doing «The Portraits of the Trees» - not in the light of their botanical meanings, but in the light of psychological and philosophical importance and value…." (Ashot Kirakosyan)
