Amerigo Tamburrino

Self-taught. in 1928 he took part in the I Mostra Primaverile d'Arte organized by the GUF of Naples with Luci e ombre and the following year he exhibited three landscapes at the Mostra del Virgulto. During his formative years, together with Mario Vittorio and other young painters, he was part of the 'Crisconiani' group, with whom he shared a broad and dense brushstroke of colour, together with dark, almost severe chromatic ranges. The motifs that interest me do not differ from the usual ones of the time: the figures, the landscape, the still life. In 1930 he took part in the second Fascist Trade Union Exhibition, with Self-Portrait and Case, revealing a tonal sensitivity of impressionist derivation. Keen observer of nature, he loves to paint en plein air, managing to communicate to the observer the emotions he feels in front of the truth. «Walker and shoe consumer» (P. Girace, 1964), he goes around the Neapolitan countryside in search of unpublished places and suggestive glimpses which he fixes on the canvas with quick and snappy brushstrokes. In 1932 he gained public attention with his first solo exhibition in the Sala Paola, which brought together sixty works including La pipe, In villa, Da Capodimonte, Via Roma. While remaining an independent painter by temperament and character, he shared in these years the attempt to get out of the limits of a backward and provincial culture showing an openness to the problems of contemporary art. Paolo Ricci recalls the lively debates on the avant-garde among the young artists who gathered around Crisconio. Figura is a work in which meditation on Cézanne is felt. The painter faces the construction of the image with new responsibility. The geometry of the volumes is highlighted by a mellow color played on the prevalence of grays and greens. The isolated figure of the woman seen from three quarters merges with the environment in a calm relationship of light and shadow. Interior offers a space punctuated by a diagonal cut that gives a sense of depth. A vase of flowers, an open book in the foreground, behind a window that offers an indefinite landscape to the eye. The warm tones, an expressive brushstroke, are the predominant notes of the works of these years. Winter exhibited at the IV Fascist Interprovincial Exhibition in 1933 confirms the ability to quickly and concisely fix the motif on the canvas: a bare trunk of a tree in the foreground announcing the winter season. Tamburrini continued to exhibit in the successive Trade Union Exhibitions in Campania until 1942 without however giving in to the rhetoric of the regime and continuing to maintain a solid relationship with everyday reality. In 1943, with Placido and Taliercio, he exhibited twenty-four works at the Art Gallery in an exhibition organized by the Fascist Union of Professionals and Artists of Naples.
