This church is a former Jesuit church designed by Father W. Van Hees and built in the period 1650-1671. The facade, synthetically conceived, with a strongly emphasized central section, vertically bound by continuous colossal columns and pilasters with powerfully profiled surfaces, presents itself as the most important architectural element of the church.
The Il Gesù in Rome by Renaissance architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola was the model for this church. The similarity of the three-aisled Baroque church with an altar is said to be so striking that the facade continues as an altar outside the church. The central middle section with curved pediment, a balustrade and both claw pieces with volutes, each equipped with sculpted candlesticks, contribute to this. The sculptural medallions, cartouches, volutes, festoons and garlands reinforce the image of an eternal festive high mass and show a victorious church.
