Amal Hassani: Born in 1947 in Rabat, Morocco.

Amal Hassani grew up in Rabat. His mother died when he was one year old and his father didn't want to deal with a baby, having 3 other children as well. He sent Amal to live with an aunt who, also died when he was 2 years old. From there he was moved to a distant cousin's house, but he remembers feeling like a stranger. Finally at age 7 he was allowed to move back into his father's home with his 3 older siblings. But there, too he felt like he didn't belong. The next 10 years were turbulent and filled with suppressed emotion. His father was frightening and hot-headed. His 12 year old sister did her best to take care of him, but the poor girl was cooking and cleaning for all the family, which didn't leave her much time or energy for "mothering".

After receiving his baccalaureate he couldn't wait to leave Rabat. He went to Paris and Montpelier and fell in love with the paintings of Arshile Gorky, Willem De Kooning, Philip Guston, Wassily Kandinsky and other artists of the early 20th century.
Returning to Morocco in 1970, he took up residence in Tangier where he began painting in earnest. He exhibited in different venues around the country, in Spain and England.
He moved to the United States permanently in 1993 with his wife and 3 sons. After receiving his diploma in interior design found work at Thomasville and later Havertys as an interior decorator specializing in all styles of decor while implementing Feng-shui. He was often commissioned by Realtors to stage luxury homes for sale.
After retiring in 2015 from Havertys, he spends much of his time in his studio with his paint brushes and canvases. Despite his turbulent childhood, his paintings reflect harmony and a non physical universe where love, poetry and song are the common.

It is my hope that the viewer will be inspired to collect a piece of my art and perhaps to gift art to others who my be encouraged to begin collecting art. Fine art prints, very reasonably priced, are available online at AmalHassani.
