Un marbre, commandé par l’État en 1888, taillé entre 1888 et 1898. Entré au musée du Luxembourg en 1901 ; attribué au musée Rodin en 1919.
Le Baiser représentait à l’origine Paolo et Francesca, personnages issus de La Divine Comédie, poème de Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). Tués par le mari de Francesca qui les avait surpris en train de s’embrasser, les deux amoureux furent condamnés à errer dans les Enfers. Ce groupe, conçu tôt par Rodin, dans le processus créatif de La Porte de L'Enfer, figura en bonne place au bas du vantail gauche, face à Ugolin, jusqu’en 1886, date à laquelle le sculpteur prit conscience que cette représentation du bonheur et de la sensualité était en contradiction avec le thème de son grand projet.
Il en fit alors une œuvre autonome et l’exposa dès 1887. Le modelé souple et lisse, la composition très dynamique et le thème charmant valurent à ce groupe un succès immédiat. Aucun détail anecdotique ne venant rappeler l’identité des deux amants, le public le baptisa Le Baiser, titre abstrait qui traduit bien son caractère universel. L’État français en commanda une version agrandie en marbre que Rodin mit près de dix ans à livrer. Ce n’est qu’en 1898 qu’il accepta d’exposer ce qu’il appelait son « grand bibelot » en pendant de l’audacieux Balzac, comme pour mieux faire accepter ce dernier.
