And then there was a dead city in front of my eyes: the ruins of the buildings with roofs fallen off, collapsed walls; ruins of temples settled with arches, dropped on the ground but not depleted of proportions of Tuscan architecture columns; there were giant skeletons of the aqueduct in the distance; there were the remains of the Acropolis, which had anticipated the Parthenon, at the foot of the filled with silt volcano; and then there were traces of the embankment, all the signs of the seaside port which served as a refuge for merchant ships and military triremes; and even further there were long rows of collapsed buildings, deserted holes of the former streets , - the new Pompey, hidden beneath the waters! And it arose before me by the will of Captain Nemo! Where was I? Where? I wanted to know it, I wanted to ask about it, but I would have to put off a head crash helmet! But Captain Nemo was already approaching me and marked down my arm. Then, holding up a piece of chalky stone, he engraved on the black basalt wall one word: ATLANTIS.
