A grave was being dug slowly. Scared fishes leaped away. I heard the muffled sound of iron on calcareous soil and saw sparks flowing when pick stroke flint lying in deep waters. The hole became longer and wider, and soon it became deep enough to contain a human. Then the porters came. The body, wrapped in a white cloth of fine linen, was lowered into the grave, full of water. Captain Nemo and his companions, with hands folded on his chest, knelt... And we, all three, bowed our heads. Tomb was showered with debris of dug ground, and a low mound was formed above. When it was over, Captain and his comrades, sunk down to one knee, raised their hands in a sign of the last farewell ... Then the funeral procession moved off on the return journey. We again went under the arcades of the underwater forest, by the coral groves and bushes; consistently making our way up the hill. Light flashed in the distance. We walked on the guiding light and boarded the "Nautilus" an hour later.
Changed me clothes, I went up to deck and sat down next to a searchlight. I was entirely at the mercy of dark thoughts. Soon, I was approached by Captain Nemo. Having regained his self-control, he said: - There is our quiet cemetery in a depth of several hundred feet under water! - Your dead sleep there quietly, Captain. They are beyond the reach of sharks! - Yes, sir, - said Captain Nemo - and of sharks and of people!
