Dave Coulter, a British artist specialising in cityscapes, is a prominent figure within the Northern Art movement. David’s talent has given him the ability to paint in a wide variety of styles. His current artistic focus centres around the streets of Manchester and Salford, capturing the dynamic energy of these multifaceted cities, a subject that has inspired countless painters before him. Coulter's connection to the North is as intrinsic as the scenes he depicts.
Now in his early 70s, Coulter has witnessed a dramatic transformation of his home region. He has lived through the decline of industrial mills and factories, the Salford slum clearances of the 1960s, and the subsequent rise of a vibrant, commercially successful area illuminated by a new generation of "bright lights."
“I want my pictures to show people what they might have missed as they go past the same places every day. I think the city comes to life with a bit of rain. It makes it look a bit grittier and I try to capture the reflections and the people around me, especially how the light glistens around people”
Coulter's unique perspective lies in his ability to weave these layers of history and change into his canvases. Viewing one of his paintings is akin to experiencing Manchester and Salford's past and present simultaneously. The architecture may evolve, but the human element remains a constant, anchoring his work in the enduring spirit of the North.
