The Artist, Christopher Makamba captivates the essence of unity through the carving of the Southern Ground Hornbill, bringing a smooth finish and their beaks coming together, cherishing the essence these birds brings as they come together, as a sign of calling for peace amongst tribes. The smoothness and shiny polished excellent finish is an embodiment of the Artist’s true architectural and artistic talent infused by bringing edification to human life.

The Southern Ground Hornbill is amongst two of the biggest land birds mainly found in the Southern Region of Africa. The cultural significance of the hornbill bird amongst the Ndebele people is that its early morning calls are a sign of the rain that ends droughts.

For the Ndebele People, killing the Southern Ground Hornbill is believed to bring death to the killer as it is a unique bird not to be killed. According to the Ndebele People, when the bird comes closer to residential communities means that an Elderly person within the community will die. The Taveta People carry a cultural belief that killing the Southern Ground Hornbill Bird brings fatal illness upon anyone who kills such a bird.

The significance of the Hornbill bird and the contextual importance to several cultures that it ends drought, truly represents the end of struggles and suffrage and brings luck. So if you are someone looking for something that brings luck, this is one such sculpture that carries such significance. The rich appreciation ascribed to these birds can add a more meaningful presence in your Museum, Art gallery or Airport as a Display.
