Catherine Pouplain se plonge dans la peinture dans les années 90 parallèlement à un parcours de journaliste musicale au sein de Radio France internationale à Paris.
Elle s’installe en Bretagne en 2004 et place dès lors la peinture au premier plan de son parcours professionnel avec l’ouverture d’un atelier-galerie au port de pêche de Lorient en 2006. Jusqu’en 2012, elle y travaille et organise de multiples manifestations avec les artistes du Pays de Lorient soit une trentaine d’expositions.
Fin 2011, un comédien lui propose un projet théâtral mêlant peinture et comédie ce qui la mène vers le spectacle vivant et la création d’une compagnie. Ensemble, ils écrivent un spectacle jeune public, le Petit Phil rouge, dans lequel, elle peint en direct. Après la fermeture de la galerie fin 2012, le spectacle vivant devient son activité principale mais la peinture demeure omniprésente.
En 2019, les crayons de couleur remplacent petit à petit les pinceaux pour devenir son médium principal et privilégié.
