I am a freelance photographer working in Cape Town, South Africa for more than 40 years and have exhibited internationally ( The Cordoned Heart - funded by Carnegie Foundation in the 1980's).
I was employed as a photographer by the largest newspaper group in South Africa, Independent Newspapers, for approximately 15 years, and have covered most of the news events in South Africa. These events include, among others, the release of Nelson Mandela, his first speech on the day of his release, his swearing in as President of South Africa and his photo-ops with various world leaders like Queen Elizabeth ll and Bill and Hilary Clinton, etc.
I have a large body of work accumulated over a 40 year period which also includes my travels in Southern Africa, Australia, Singapore and Thailand. My work is primarily old school, photographic film and paper. Back in the day standard equipment was 2 Nikon bodies (1 for colorslide and 1 for black and white), 24mm, 50mm and 85mm lenses and a flash. We also had a pool of telephoto lenses we could draw from when required.
When out on assignment, you shot the job/s and then made your way back to the darkroom to process your work, uncertain of what you had in the bag. Once you had processed your film/s you took it to the light box and made a selection of negs to be printed. It was only then that you could see the fruits of your labour. Although there were very competent darkroom staff who did the processing and printing of photographs, as a photographer you were expected to have the ability to process and print in black and white and were expected to do so when required.
