Arevalo García Vielma, a contemporary Venezuelan artist, embarked on a transformative journey that led him from the realm of engineering to the vibrant world of art. Initially pursuing studies at the engineering school with the intention of becoming a civil engineer, he soon discovered his true passion lay in the practice of art. Making a pivotal decision, he changed course and enrolled at the School of Plastic Arts of the Experimental Faculty of Art of the University of Zulia, specializing in drawing.
During his time at the university, Arevalo's artistic expression underwent a significant evolution. He delved into abstraction, utilizing assembly techniques to create compositions inspired by the industrial landscapes of his hometown. These works, characterized by their use of found objects and artifacts from industrial complexes, served as a reflection of the oil-rich context of his surroundings. Despite their abstract nature, they retained elements of the cultural heritage of Lake Maracaibo, intertwining themes of fishing, stilt houses, mangroves, and more with industrial imagery.
As his university years progressed, Arevalo embarked on a parallel exploration of figurative art, drawing inspiration from philosophy to inform his creative process. This shift towards figurative expression marked a new chapter in his artistic journey, one that continues to evolve and expand to encompass drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and engraving.
Today, Arevalo García Vielma's latest works represent a synthesis of his artistic explorations, blending elements of abstraction and figuration to create a rich tapestry of expression. Through his diverse range of mediums, he seeks to convey not only his personal vision but also the intricate interplay between the ancient and the industrial, the abstract and the figurative, inviting viewers to delve deeper into the complexities of his artistic narrative.
