At the end of the Long Island Expressway is a small town stock car track called "Riverhead Raceway'. I was first introduced to it by a DJ by the name of "Wild Girl", describing "Enduro's" on an alternative radio station WFMU. I set out to see what she had described as a "Truly Wild" scene.
I was not disappointed. Picture 100 1970's and 80's 8 cylinder beaters battling it out on a quarter mile paved track with lots of crashes. The cars resembled John Chamberlain sculptures.
Both men and women drove, and all were amateurs, competing for bragging rights and small winnings. There were 4 of these races back to back.
I was hooked.
I continued to document the races for the next 4 years, making friends with the drivers and of course, making art.

Anthony Feyer, a contemporary American painter, traces his roots to the Bowery during a time when it basked in a state of glorious decay, teeming with a vibrant mix of hookers, winos, dope fiends, and flop houses. The Bowery's unique atmosphere during his upbringing served as a rich backdrop that has significantly influenced his artistic journey.

Over the past three decades, Feyer has dedicated himself to documenting a diverse array of sub-cultures, ranging from snake handlers in West Virginia to Furries at their conventions. These varied experiences have become the cornerstone of his visual vocabulary, enabling him to produce thought-provoking and compelling works in both paint and video.

Far from an art world insider, Feyer deliberately maintains his position on the margins, much like the sub-cultures he explores. His artistic endeavors have garnered attention through numerous shows in New York, Toronto, and various art fairs across Europe.

Operating as an allegorical realist painter, Feyer's focus lies in documenting unusual facets of North American culture. With a keen interest in the cultural anthropology of the groups he is drawn to, his work delves into five major themes cultivated over years of extensive research and fieldwork. These themes include snake-handling churches in Appalachia, small-town stock car races known as "Enduros," depictions of Southeast Alaska's harsh landscape and its rugged inhabitants, the decline of 1980s New York City, and his most recent exploration into the world of "Furries."

Feyer's artistic process revolves around immersing himself in subjects and experiences that are novel to him, transforming the study into an educational journey documented through his paintings and videos. The individuals depicted in his work often belong to the ranks of outsiders, working-class, and marginalized communities, reluctant to open themselves up to outsiders. Feyer's art not only captures dramatic visual content but also unveils the hidden, sometimes doomed subcultures existing on the fringes of our society. Through his lens, he unveils the stories of those who often go unnoticed, providing a voice to the intricate tapestry of humanity's diverse narratives.
