Glossy finish

J'ai personnellement développé ce syndrome à deux reprises :
- Lorsque je me suis lancée en thèse, je me suis retrouvée dans un vivier d'étudiants au parcours impeccable. Ils savaient depuis leur enfance qu'ils seraient archéologues, leur chemin était tout tracé. Ils savaient quoi faire, quel concours passer, quel métier exercer ensuite. Je venais quant à moi d'un BAC Scientifique et, refusée en prépa pour être vétérinaire, je me suis orientée par hasard en Histoire de l'Art et Archéologie. Cela m'a plu. J'ai continué en Master par amour de la recherche, puis en thèse pour les mêmes raisons. Je ne savais rien du monde de la recherche scientifique, je ne connaissais ni les débouchés, ni les noms des pontes de la branche. Lorsque je suis arrivée à Athènes pour un mois de recherche en 2013, c'était mon premier voyage en avion hors de France. J'avais 25 ans. Autour de moi, s'affairaient des dizaines de doctorants qui connaissaient déjà la ville par coeur, avaient écrit moults articles et participé à pléthores de conférences. Et au milieu de tout ça, il y avait moi, la fille d'ouvrier qui combinait plusieurs jobs pour payer ses études, qui voulait juste profiter d'Athènes. Durant ces dix années de doctorat, je ne me suis jamais sentie légitime.
- Après ma thèse, je me suis lancée dans l'art. Là encore, je cherche ma place. Je n'ai jamais pris un seul cours de dessin ou de peinture, je n'ai encore moins fait d'école d'art. Quand je vends une toile, je culpabilise. J'ai peur que l'acheteur revienne me voir en me disant qu'il est finalement déçu. Aux vernissages, j'ai l'angoisse d'être démasquée. Quand je suis prise à un Salon ou dans une galerie, je me dis que pas grand monde n'a dû postuler ou qu'on a voulu me faire plaisir...
La toile représente ainsi une femme debout, les yeux bandés, tenant entre ses mains un masque. Le bandage évoque le manque de lucidité sur sa réussite et sa légitimité, tandis que le masque figure les deux domaines dans lesquels le syndrome de l'imposteur s'est installé dans mon cas : l'archéologie (avec une amphore à figures noires représentant le sacrifice de Polyxène - 570-550 av. J.-C.) et la peinture (avec une toile de Gauguin dont je n'ai pas le titre).

Born in 1988 in Oise, Annabelle has been painting canvases and writing books since childhood. In the family, no one practices an artistic, musical or sporting activity. What matters in this environment is above all university studies to have, at the end, a "real" job.
So Annabelle obeys and climbs the ladder: degree in art history and archeology in Amiens, Master in Sciences of Antiquity in Lille, then, finally, the last stage: a doctorate in Greek archeology which she obtains in 2017. However, during her research, she did not stop painting and even exhibiting whenever she had the opportunity. At the end of her thesis defence, she informed her jury: no, she would not embark on research but would attempt an artistic career.
The difficult issue of identity, duality and inner conflict is at the heart of Annabelle's thinking. Whether it is the injunction made to women (on their physique, their activities or their social status) or the personal evolution in our society (where the norm is still the only model and where the difference is stifled), the question is then the same: how to make our deep convictions coincide with the world around us? How can we assert our identity without feeling judged? Can we remain ourselves, flourish, knowing that we are constantly influenced by society, the eyes of others, social networks, money or even success?
Eco-feminist and anti-conformist, Annabelle draws from her personal history these two-speed anxieties, torn between her deep convictions and the current norm. She then analyzes her own life course and delivers an almost autobiographical gallery on the canvas: if none of the characters really resemble her, they nevertheless evoke all her concerns, her conflicts, the people she has met as well as different moments of her life. life.
