Franciscus Assisiensis; * 1181 oder 1182 in Assisi, Italien als Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone; † 3. Oktober 1226 in der Portiuncula-Kapelle unterhalb der Stadt) war der Begründer des Ordens der Minderbrüder (Ordo fratrum minorum, Franziskaner) und Mitbegründer der Klarissen. Er wird in der römisch-katholischen Kirche als Heiliger verehrt. Hinsichtlich des Quellenumfangs zu Leben und Wirken gehört Franziskus zu den am besten dokumentierten Persönlichkeiten des Mittelalters.
Franziskus lebte nach dem Vorbild Jesu Christi (sogenannte imitatio Christi). Diese Lebensweise zog gleichgesinnte Gefährten an, was zur Gründung der Minderen Brüder führte, deren Orden rasch wuchs. Trotz großer Widerstände während der ersten Jahre seines Wirkens wurde er von der katholischen Kirche schon zwei Jahre nach seinem Tode heiliggesprochen. Der von Franziskus gegründete Orden breitete sich binnen weniger Jahre in ganz Europa aus, im Heiligen Römischen Reich etwa bis zur Ostsee, wo bereits 1230 eine Niederlassung in Riga gegründet wurde.
Franciscus Assisiensis; * 1181 or 1182 in Assisi, Italy as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone; † October 3, 1226 in the Portiuncula Chapel below the city) was the founder of the Order of the Friars Minor (Ordo fratrum minorum, Franciscans) and co-founder of the Poor Clares. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. In terms of the range of sources on his life and work, Francis is one of the best documented personalities of the Middle Ages.
Francis lived according to the example of Jesus Christ (so-called imitatio Christi). This way of life attracted like-minded companions, which led to the founding of the Friars Minor, whose order grew rapidly. Despite great resistance during the first years of his work, he was canonized by the Catholic Church just two years after his death. The order founded by Francis spread throughout Europe within a few years, from the Holy Roman Empire to the Baltic Sea, where a branch was founded in Riga in 1230.
