Biography
My name is Alex Herrera. Born in 1972, I'm a self-taught artist from New Mexico. My background in education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Care Administration, and currently an MBA in Marketing student. I've been interested in art and painting as far back as I can remember. I believe art is an expression of self. Expressing thoughts, and feelings through gestural abstract paintings is where I find my passion. When I'm painting, I'm free. My completed paintings are a reflection of my thoughts. Without planning, I use materials that are readily available. The most common include paint lids, cups, syringes, tubes, wood, sponges and hands. My goals as an artist are to heal, and continue inspiration throughout the art community.

THE POSITIVE IMPACTS OF ART!
A psychiatric illness we hear a lot about in modern society is depression. In the 1800's, treatments weren’t as common as today — for example, conventional medical approaches. In recent times, patients have access to treatments such as medications, rehabilitation, pain management, etc. Accenting these treatments with art can be beneficial.
Art therapy can create a great sense of character. This leads to more creative thoughts and actions. Survival through emotion is essential to life. Our feelings are what keep us from all being the same. Without feelings, we become robots.
