Alex Steele-Mortimer

I have a degree in fine art from the University of Victoria in Canada. Since then I have lived and painted in Canada, England, Hong Kong and now France where I have lived for 20 years.

I have always been drawn to oil painting and it is still the medium that I use. I love to build up the layers on my paintings gradually, rubbing them back, scratching them, and reapplying them again.

My work has moved away from the figurative which I was drawn to as a younger artist to much more abstract landscapes and seascapes.

I am fascinated by colour and light, particularly in relation to the sky and sea. My aim is to create an effect and emotional experience through my paintings.
