Ai Imamura is a contemporary Japanese artist known for her intricate creations using Jindai cedar, an ancient Japanese cedar preserved in the earth for 2,500 to 2,600 years due to natural events like volcanic eruptions. This rare wood, imbued with rich natural colors from soil minerals, forms the foundation of Imamura’s exquisitely crafted boxes. She decorates these pieces with delicate patterns, meticulously applying tiny fragments of gold and silver foil to evoke a sense of natural beauty.

Imamura’s process is as refined as her materials. She begins by cutting fine lines for her designs by eye, using a handcrafted bamboo knife. For each piece, she fuses between four and six layers of gold and platinum foil with a charcoal fire, adjusting the layering based on the specific effect she wants to achieve. Each line of foil is then individually cut and carefully positioned using a brush in each hand, affixing them with Nikawa glue. Through this labor-intensive technique, Imamura achieves a harmonious balance of traditional craftsmanship and natural elegance in her work.
