Beethoven has been my favorite composer since childhood. When I started my piano classes, I was looking forward to learning first "Fuer Elise '' and then "Moonlight Sonata". Soon my dream came true, and since that time these two melodies have given me inspiration and power in very different situations. I played "Moonlight Sonata" every day, several times in sequence after the morning my mother passed away. Later I got to know that "Moonlight Sonata" was a masterpiece created by Beethoven instead of committing a suicide! No surprise then, that this immortal music gave me a reason to live and overcome my grief in the hardest times of my life.
Why Matterhorn, would you ask? This is one more wonder of our beautiful world that once saved my life. During the pandemic in 2020 I got sick very hard, and craved for anything that could bring colors and courage back into my life. One day I found my personal medicine! It was a video about the journey to Switzerland. When I saw the shots of Matterhorn under the stars, I caught my aim. At that moment I promised myself that one day I would come and see this legendary mountain peak with my own eyes. Since that day my recuperation started.
Now it is 2022, and there are more challenges and global misfortunes in the world, but I still play and listen to “Moonlight Sonata”, see Matterhorn in my dreams and believe in life and humanity. Because if nature and people have managed to create such masterpieces, then reason and love are bound to prevail.

My name is Elena Agaltseva-Barskaya, I'm an artist and photographer currently based in Karelia (Russia). My major inspiration comes from Northern nature of my homeland, Finland and Scandinavia.

Being also a folk art specialist, I really like mixing various ethnic motifs and traditional crafts in my own art. As a language instructor and researcher, I travel a lot and meet people from all over the world; these contacts always get embedded into my heart and enrich my cultural palette, which then transforms into new colors and shades on my canvases.

As for my painting manner, it is rooted in photography and French impressionism. Since schoolyears I've been an 'optics nerd' :) I pay great attention to the lighting effects, shadows, lights, color tones and tint effects. Abstract painting and conceptual photography give me an endless field for experiments.

Art has always been my major tool for self-understanding and expressing my insights. For me, it is a splendid universal language for sharing philosophy, view of life and inner discoveries. Sharing my paintings and pictures with you is my way to give you my soul treasures by connecting to your hearts and minds via eyes and touch.
