This one-of-a-kind hand-carved sculpture by Syrian artist Zohair Kherbik reinterprets the ancient Phoenician myth of Europa, the daughter of King Agenor. Blending symbolic depth with a refined figurative style, the piece explores Europa's abduction by Zeus and her transformation into a cultural bridge between East and West.
Sculpted from natural olive wood, the figure rises vertically with a dynamic organic rhythm. Subtle anatomical details merge with the texture of the wood, while a symbolic bull form emerges from the base—referencing Zeus’s divine metamorphosis and Europa’s mythic voyage across the Mediterranean.
The sculpture evokes themes of exile, identity, and cultural transmission. Kherbik’s approach is rooted in ancient storytelling yet rendered through a distinctly contemporary lens, creating a dialogue between past and present.
