While the scenes that China projects of itself to the world have huge modern skyscrapers, most of the country, even inside those modern cities, is made up of brick buildings with tile roofs. Indeed, I can see the tall smokestacks of four brick "factories" near the university where I teach, outside one of those modern cities.
In this quaint scene, it is May. The warm sun shines on the gates of Black Mountain Village. Up close or in the distance, the mountains shimmer in the sun for everyone to enjoy. Touched by the excitement and beauty of the moment, Zhang felt compelled to pick up his brush and paint the scene. He wasn't painting the view, though, but the mood of the moment.
We liked the simple beauty of this oh so typical scene of today's China, especially the way he has done the shadows of the house, the electric line and the tree, making stark contrasts to emphasize the brightness of the unseen sun.
