Zalkian (1981) is a pseudonymous artist whose identity, including his name, nationality, and age, remains undisclosed. He only appears in public wearing a full-face mask to maintain his anonymity, typically only for performances involving unique stunts. Within the art world, he is regarded as one of the most elusive figures, with only a limited selection of his artworks available, primarily as limited-edition prints. Notably, prestigious art collectors, as well as artist Damien Hirst, have frequently compared him to Banksy.
Publicly accessible information about Zalkian is minimal. He is known to have worked privately for select clients until the early 2010s. His reputation began to take shape in affluent circles in 2017, following a controversial performance at a private auction in Madrid, where he set one of his own artworks on fire before an exclusive audience. After this event, he withdrew from public view to focus on personal projects, though reports suggest he completed commissions for clients in the United States and Germany during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2024, Zalkian drew widespread attention by participating in a new project titled "Inferno Auctions." In this unconventional auction format, bidders can place offers on his work, yet the live audience retains the power to destroy the artwork. Should a piece be burned, he then releases limited-edition prints of the work for a 24-hour period.
