Zakhar Shevchuk’s “Bodyscape” is a masterful oil painting (58x100x2 cm, 2024) that embodies his unique ability to blend abstraction and realism into a single, captivating narrative. This work draws viewers into a visual dialogue, where the lines between a serene landscape and a reclining nude blur, creating an experience that is both engaging and transformative. From afar, the painting’s textured surface, with its flowing lines and earthy tones, suggests the contours of a natural landscape. But as one approaches, the delicate curves of a reclining nude emerge, resting gracefully on a vibrant, colorful fabric.

The contrast between the vibrant foreground—alive with reds, pinks, and earthy browns—and the minimalist dark background creates a sense of balance and harmony. Shevchuk’s use of texture is extraordinary, with layered brushstrokes that give the painting a tactile, almost sculptural quality. The interplay between abstraction and realism invites viewers to question their perceptions and explore the deeper meaning behind the work. “Bodyscape” is a celebration of the human form and its timeless elegance, a testament to Shevchuk’s ability to push artistic boundaries while remaining rooted in tradition. This painting is a powerful addition to any contemporary art collection.

Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.

With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
