Zakhar Shevchuk’s Hide and Seek (2024) is a powerful oil painting that speaks softly but hits hard. With its compact dimensions (29x24 cm), this work carries the emotional density of a full-sized war diary. Created in response to the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it shows children taking refuge in bathtubs – a surreal yet tragically common sight in homes lacking proper bomb shelters.

The painting uses impasto technique to build texture and tension. A muted palette of greys, blues, and cream tones evokes stillness and coldness. The figures are simplified – almost anonymous – and arranged in a vertical sequence, adding a sense of repetition and routine. Each child seems to be floating or suspended in a watery limbo. The result is a meditative, symbolic still life that captures the absurd blend of fragility and survival in times of violence.

This is a work of psychological and historical resonance. It speaks to collectors who value political context, emotional subtlety, and artwork that preserves untold stories.

Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.

With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
