The painting "The Atmosphere of the Venetian City" immerses the viewer in the breathtaking beauty and rich cultural essence of Venice. Bathed in the warm glow of a setting sun, the city’s skyline rises in a hazy silhouette, with domes and spires piercing the golden-orange sky. The hues of dusk merge seamlessly, casting a dreamy veil over the architectural grandeur of the city and infusing the waters of the lagoon with shimmering reflections. A lone gondolier in the foreground guides his gondola across the sunlit waters, his figure darkened against the radiance of the rippling surface. The gondola, a symbol of Venice’s unique charm, glides effortlessly, carrying with it a sense of nostalgia and timelessness. The careful brushstrokes capture the rhythmic movement of the water, reflecting the sky’s fiery hues in fluid, undulating patterns. The shimmering surface mirrors the grandeur of the buildings and ships, intensifying the ethereal quality of the scene. On the right, an array of boats, their masts reaching skyward, are docked along the canal, their presence adding a dynamic interplay between Venice’s maritime heritage and its present-day vibrancy. The smoke rising from the city suggests a lively atmosphere, perhaps from bustling cafés and workshops that remain active as the evening settles in. Faint figures appear on the boats and along the distant shore, adding a human element to the majestic backdrop. The domes and towers of the city stand proud, veiled in an atmospheric haze that softens their edges, evoking a sense of history and mystery. Their grandeur is subtly illuminated by the last rays of sunlight, casting long, poetic shadows over the cityscape. The contrast between the glowing sky and the cooler, shadowed buildings creates a stunning depth, drawing the eye through the composition in an effortless flow. The sky itself is a masterpiece of warm tones, transitioning from deep oranges to soft pinks and purples. Wisps of clouds stretch across the heavens, tinged with golden light, enhancing the romantic quality of the scene. The gradual blending of colors in the sky adds to the painting’s evocative nature, reinforcing the tranquil yet majestic ambiance.

Yuriy Suprunchuk is a Ukrainian painter, born on April 11, 1961, in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. He received his formal art education at the Zheleznogorsk Art School (Russia), graduating in 1982, where he studied under V. Chukuev and E. Nikulin. In 2002, he became a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.
His artistic journey began in early childhood, when a moment of watching his mother paint sparked a deep fascination with art. Suprunchuk recalls how, as a small child, he once stayed up all night painting after being inspired by the scene of his mother working on a composition.
He later studied at the Kharkiv State Pedagogical Institute, where he not only refined his technical skills but also acquired deep theoretical knowledge and art teaching methodology. Under the mentorship of distinguished professors, he developed a strong foundation in both classical and contemporary Ukrainian art traditions. As a student and later as an educator himself, he placed a high emphasis on nurturing the individual talent and expression of his pupils.
Yurii Suprunchuk’s creative style blends realism with elements of romanticism and fantasy, often inspired by Ukrainian folklore, landscapes, and national cultural identity. His compositions are notable for their philosophical undercurrents and metaphysical dimensions. In his works, one can often find abstracted objects, symbolic figures, and stylized interpretations of natural forms.
His paintings are characterized by rhythmic compositions, balanced use of light, and expressive color schemes. He often explores existential themes and the metaphysical presence of the human spirit.
Suprunchuk’s creative approach is introspective and emotional, yet rooted in structured form. His works frequently portray female figures, domestic still lifes, Ukrainian village landscapes, and cultural archetypes. The recurrence of motifs like trees, fish, vessels, and abstract elements imbues his paintings with layered meaning, often inviting the viewer to contemplate deeper symbolic narratives.
In addition to his artistic practice, Yurii Suprunchuk has taught for many years, inspiring a new generation of artists in Zhytomyr. His students and colleagues recognize him not only for his exceptional talent, but also for his philosophical depth and dedication to the craft.
Today, his works are held in private collections and exhibitions, continuing to speak through color, form, and inner vision — a testament to the enduring power of Ukrainian painting.
